T-bone collisions, also called side-impact or broadside crashes, are among the deadliest types of car accidents on Florida roads. IIHS analysis of 2024 NHTSA data shows that side impacts accounted for 22% of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths, second only to frontal impacts. These collisions are so dangerous because the side of a vehicle provides far less structural protection than the front or rear. There is no engine block, no crumple zone, and often only a thin door panel between the occupant and the striking vehicle.
At Louis Berk Law, our Orlando T-bone accident lawyers prove fault at the intersection by obtaining traffic camera footage, EDR (black box) data, police reports, and witness testimony. When another driver ran a red light, failed to yield, or made an unsafe left turn and struck the side of your vehicle, you have the right to pursue compensation for injuries that are often catastrophic.
Side-impact crashes produce more severe injuries per collision than rear-end or even many head-on crashes, and the physics of the impact explain why. In a frontal collision, the engine compartment, hood, and frame absorb and distribute the impact force before it reaches the occupant. In a rear collision, the trunk, rear frame, and seat back provide a buffer.
In a T-bone crash, the only protection between the occupant and the striking vehicle is the door panel and, in newer vehicles, side-impact airbags. The distance between the point of impact and the occupant can be as little as 12 inches. The force transfers directly into the occupant's body, particularly the hip, pelvis, ribcage, and head on the impact side.
Our content team, which includes a medical professional, sees a consistent pattern in T-bone injury cases. Occupants on the impact side (the side that was struck) sustain significantly more severe injuries than occupants on the opposite side. The most common impact-side injuries include:
Children seated on the impact side are at particularly high risk. As vehicle height disparities increase (SUVs and trucks striking sedans), the point of impact often aligns directly with a child's head and upper body, even when properly restrained in a car seat.
T-bone accidents most commonly occur at intersections where one driver violates the right of way. The specific traffic violations that cause these crashes are well documented and form the basis of the negligence claim.
Our attorneys have handled T-bone collision cases at intersections throughout Central Florida. The most dangerous locations include:
Our car accident attorney in Orlando page explains how we investigate standard vehicle collisions across these same corridors.
Establishing which driver had the legal right of way at the moment of impact is the central liability question in every T-bone case. Florida Statute §316.123 governs right-of-way rules at intersections, and violations of this statute are direct evidence of negligence.
Evidence we use to prove right-of-way violations:
Left-turn T-bone crashes present a unique liability question. When a driver turning left is struck by an oncoming vehicle going straight, the turning driver is typically at fault for failing to yield under §316.123. However, the oncoming driver may share fault if they were speeding, ran a yellow-to-red light, or were distracted.
Insurance companies exploit this ambiguity. In left-turn T-bone cases, the at-fault driver's insurer will almost always argue that the oncoming vehicle (your vehicle) was exceeding the speed limit, entered on a late yellow, or failed to take evasive action. Our attorneys counter these arguments with EDR data from both vehicles that establishes actual speeds, traffic camera footage that shows signal timing, and accident reconstruction analysis that demonstrates the turning driver's failure to yield. In one case, our team secured $650,000 for a motorist who sustained complex clavicle and rib fractures requiring surgical hardware placement when an oncoming vehicle turned directly into the driver's side door on Colonial Drive.
Florida's 2023 tort reform (HB 837) affects T-bone cases through the modified comparative negligence rule under §768.81(6). If you are found 51% or more at fault, your claim is barred entirely. In T-bone cases, the at-fault driver's insurer will argue that you contributed to the collision by speeding through the intersection, entering on a late yellow, or failing to take evasive action.
The medical damages evidence rule under §768.0427 limits recoverable medical expenses to amounts actually paid, not billed. For T-bone victims with severe injuries and large hospital bills, this reduces the settlement starting point.
The statute of limitations is two years from the date of the accident under §95.11. Given the severity of T-bone injuries and the time needed for treatment and recovery, this two-year deadline can arrive while victims are still in rehabilitation.
T-bone accident victims in Florida can recover compensation for the full range of damages caused by the collision.
In one case, our team recovered $1,250,000 for a driver who suffered severe pelvic fractures, internal bleeding, and a mild traumatic brain injury after a commercial delivery van ran a red light at high speed on Alafaya Trail.

At Louis Berk Law, we prioritize evidence preservation in every T-bone case because intersection evidence disappears fast. Traffic camera footage is overwritten. Witnesses' memories fade. EDR data can be lost if the vehicle is repaired or scrapped.
On the day you contact us, we begin requesting traffic camera footage from the city or county, send a preservation letter to the at-fault driver's insurer to protect EDR data, and coordinate with treating physicians to document your injuries with the diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT) needed to prove the full extent of the damage.
Attorney Louis Berk has handled T-bone cases where the insurance company argued the client "ran the yellow" based solely on the adjuster's assumptions. Our traffic camera footage proved the client entered the intersection on a solid green, and the at-fault driver ran a red light by more than two seconds. That evidence transformed a disputed liability case into a clear negligence claim. In one case, our team obtained full available insurance policy limits of $225,000 for a driver who sustained torn knee ligaments and persistent post-concussion symptoms following a side-impact crash on US 192.
